Internship: High School
AISMA is launching a special internship designed to reach out to communities that have been shut out of research opportunities. While our focus is black and brown students, our internship seeks to elevate the educational potential for all at-risk children.
AISMA and its partners will sponsor 15 academic half-year internship slots and 30 one-year internship program slots.
The half-year-long program will have students paired with a more senior student and mentor. The student will have the opportunity to define an area of research through a four-page paper or elect from five areas of established institute program research areas. These students will meet once weekly with an assigned research manager to ensure their project is progressing according to the current research outline. The student is expected to publish a paper in the Institute’s journal and practice to present their project at scientific or education conferences.
The year-long program will place students on research teams. Each team will meet at least once per month with their research advisor/manager. The teams are expected to address subject areas that the institute’s researchers in residence are currently examining or a subject area recently published by a researcher in residence. Each team becomes prepared to present at a scientific or education conference and publish a research blog. The teams will be tutored in constructing, presenting, and defending papers.
All students will be welcomed at AISMA brown bag lunches with professional researchers; AISMA Journal Clubs; and AISMA Research Meetings.
All students will be given close instruction in the professional publication process.
Each student will be provided transportation, (as required), to AISMA facilities from school or agreed upon pick and drop-off locations that are safe for the students. Meals will also be made available during all on-site meetings.
