Order of Operations

The implementation of the Mecklenburg County Community Cultivation Initiative will follow a strategic order of operations to ensure successful establishment and scaling:

1      Build/Create a Model Mini-Farm: The initial phase involves establishing a central model mini-farm. This site will serve as the primary demonstration and training hub, showcasing best practices in intensive, biologically managed cultivation [1].

2      Launch Membership Program and Enrollment Contest: A membership program will be initiated, coupled with an enrollment contest or game. This approach aims to incentivize community participation and determine the selection of satellite garden sanctuary sites based on engagement [1].

3      Build Two or Three Satellite Community Garden Sanctuaries: Following the establishment of the model mini-farm and successful membership enrollment, two to three satellite community garden sanctuaries will be developed. These sanctuaries will be directly linked to and supported by the model mini-farm, extending the network's reach and impact [1].

4   Launch an Apprenticeship Program with STEAM Credentials: An apprenticeship program will be launched, offering training that culminates in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) credentials. This program will provide participants with valuable skills and formal recognition for their expertise in sustainable agriculture [1].

5      Prepare Curriculum for Apprentices to Become Instructor/Ambassadors: A specialized curriculum will be developed to train apprentices to become instructors and ambassadors for the initiative. This will foster leadership within the community and ensure the sustainable dissemination of knowledge and practices [1].

6      Establish a Nutritional Kitchen and Lab: This will allow education of the community and food preparation in a healthy fashion to receive the greatest the benefit from food as medicine. The lab will also prepare food for delivery to unhoused communities.

Community Engagement and Outreach

Effective community engagement and strategic outreach are crucial for the success and sustainability of the initiative. This will involve several key activities:

7      Publicize the Qualities and Operation of the Model Mini-Farm: The model mini-farm will be actively promoted to highlight its innovative practices, educational opportunities, and the benefits it offers to the community [1].

8      Invite Citizens in Designated Food Deserts to Apply for Membership: Targeted outreach will be conducted in designated food deserts, inviting residents to apply for membership and the opportunity to host a garden sanctuary network in their area. This ensures that the initiative directly addresses areas of greatest need [1].

9      Recruit Members from All Civic Zones and Economic Strata: To foster inclusivity and broad community support, efforts will be made to recruit members from diverse civic zones and economic backgrounds [1]. Provide for community mini-farm markets. This would allow members to develop a co-operative model in which excess food stuffs may be traded or sold at a small profit to participants whose gardens focus on different garden products. Thereby allowing the larger community to benefit from all efforts of the mini-farm system.

10      Create a Corps of Mecklenburg Ambassadors: A dedicated corps of Mecklenburg Ambassadors will be established. These ambassadors will encourage other citizens to become official sanctuary hosts through a gamified application process, leveraging friendly competition to expand the network [1].
